The first page of Google's
Search-based Keyword Tool is useful if you're still searching
for keywords and phrases, and it can also help you better
refine your keyword/phrase choices. This tool will also give
you some feedback on what keywords and phrases Google thinks
best match the various pages of your site.
Typing your website's domain name into the "Website"
box on the first page of this Google tool and clicking the
"Find keywords" button will result in a list of
keywords and phrases that Google associates with different
pages on your site. It can give you some feedback on what
keywords and phrases Google thinks match the various pages
of your site. If you're hunting for keywords and key phrases,
this tool generates lots of ideas and it tells you how many
searches/month there are for each term.
The most interesting information you can glean from Google's
Search-based Keyword Tool is from the blue link on the front
page--the blue text toward the bottom that says "Or see
top keywords across all categories." Click it!
Now, toward the top of the screen in the box labeled "Word
or phrase," type in one to three words that best describe(s)
the topic of your website. Be as focused and specific
as possible.
Click the "Find keywords" button.
The table that will appear lists things people actually type
into Google to begin searching for websites like yours. You
can see what combinations of words are most-frequently typed
in. There is a lot of useful information just on this screen,
but definitely spend time exploring this area of the keyword
tool--there is a boatload of information here to input, analyze,
and utilize in order for you to make your website's keywords
relevant to web search users!
Now go ahead and click on one of the keyword phrases that
pops up to see Google's actual search results for that phrase.
Do you see web pages like yours? If so, you're on the right
track. Otherwise, you may be in another topic area which means
perhaps people typing in that phrase are not really looking
for your type of product/website. You're trusting Google here,
but they've got some experience in these things!
Go back to the "Keyword ideas" list and keep clicking
results. Make a list of the keywords and phrases that result
in a list of websites like yours.
The point is that you don't want to use keywords or keyword
phrases on your index page that Google has matched up with
other topic areas--you want to use keywords and phrases that,
when typed into Google, will get people to a site like yours--and
hopefully one day YOUR site!
