Using Google Analytics

Google Analytics is probably the coolest and most-useful tool out there for tracking the popularity of your website. If you do nothing else, DO sign up for a Google Analytics account and get your website linked in to it! Did I mention that it's completely free?!

Once your site gets rolling a little bit, you'll love pouring over all the information Google Analytics serves up, from a nice big graph showing the number of visitors over time, to the keywords used by your visitors, to the percentage of visitors who are repeat visitors. The amount of information Google Analytics is able to present about your site is unbelievable.

Here's a screenshot of Google Analytics' "Product Tour":

In order to get started after you sign up, simply "Add a Website Profile" and then paste the unique Google Analytics tracking code into the html code of your website's index page. Wait a day or two for Google to pick up the tracking code on your site, and then the information will start rolling in.

If you have more than one website, you still only need one Google Analytics account.

Since Google Analytics generates so much information, you really need to spend some time exploring it and checking Google's own tutorials and help pages. The information is organized and presented in a very intuitive way, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting a handle on at least a few of the most important aspects of Analytics' information pages.

Some of the things discussed here on websiteslug.com are things you'll use once or twice, but Google Analytics is a must-have tool you will go back to again and again. Sign up for Google Analytics today!
